AN inspiring Barrow teenage girl with cerebral palsy will be able to learn independently and have plenty of fun thanks to a big donation.

Eve Locke is the latest beneficiary to receive a cheque of £1,000 from the Lake District Farmers Armstrong Family Charitable Fund.

The 17-year-old, of Seathwaite Road, Barrow, is physically disabled and struggles to grip a pen or pencil but loves art and paintings.

She's decided to spend the money on an iPad and have it specially adapted to her wheelchair so she can tap away and create designs and pictures on the tablet as well as watch wildlife videos.

Eve's mother, Karen, said the donation will pay for a tablet and a specialist Flexzi 3 iPad holder and will be a big help to the family.

Mrs Locke said: "Eve, although she is very physically disabled, she's very, very clever.

"She's desperate to do things independently and at school they have got an iPad with special programmes on so she's going to get one with an adapted arm set on the side of her wheelchair.

"It's from a special company so she can use it herself.

"She likes to be creative and look at pictures and paintings but, because her hands are twisted, she can't held pens, but there are special programmes she can use her finger on to make designs.

"It's going to be a big help and increase her independence."

The new buy will be of particular use when Eve goes to Alder Hey Children's Hospital early next year for an operation to flatten her spine as it will keep her busy and entertained during the long stay.

Each month the Lake District Farmers Armstrong Family Charity Fund donates £1,000 to worthy causes across the area and the cash is given out through the Evening Mail.

The money donated was raised at an annual celebrity chef event held in Dalton, hosted and sponsored by Clarence House Country Hotel and Restaurant.

James Higgins, editor of the Evening Mail, said: "This donation brings a close another year of helping out inspirational individuals and families with our partnership with the Lake District Farmers.

"Plans are now under way for next year's celebrity chefs event in February and we would encourage as many people as possible to support the good cause.

"We look forward to 2017 and helping out many more worthy people and causes."
