A MOTORIST from Barrow has captured footage of impatient drivers overtaking him on a busy stretch of a main road which has recently seen a spate of crashes.

Phil Newton, 38, from Barrow, placed a camera on the dashboard of his car and caught three different vehicles speeding past him on the A590 last Saturday.

Mr Newton had a horse trailer attached to his car so that he could pick up a horse from Penrith and was appalled to see some road users show a clear disregard for the animal's welfare.

He said: "What upsets me is that if I have to brake suddenly because somebody overtakes me it could break the horse's neck meaning that we would have to put the animal down.

"Too many people want to get from A to B as quickly as they can they have no consideration for other road users. Usually they don't get any further ahead by overtaking me so it's just stupid.

"I was doing 55mph on the 60mph stretch of the road because I had the horses in the back so I was not exactly going slow but the cars that overtook me must have been going at 70mph and one of them crossed a double white line to get past me which is illegal."

Mr Newton used to car-share with his former work colleague Amanda Quinn who sadly died at the age of 30 when her car collided with a 50-foot lorry on the A590 at Newby Bridge in 1999.

However, the 38-year-old is adamant that the road is not dangerous and believes that rash drivers are to blame.

He said: "People say that the A590 is dangerous but it's not, it's the idiots who use it that make it dangerous. You see people speeding all the time on there and it is stupid.

"They need to have a bit more consideration for others. If pedestrians are crossing the road and drivers aren't checking their mirrors properly there could be a serious head-on collision.

"If people planned their journeys and gave themselves more time to travel they wouldn't feel the need to speed and overtake."

The footage collected has since been passed on to police officers in Kendal who are looking to speak to the three drivers caught overtaking on Mr Newton's filming device.
