A FRESH inquest into the suspicious death of a baby girl from Barrow is set to take place between May and June this year, following an eight-month postponement.

Senior coroner for Cumbria David Roberts will now conduct the formal hearing into the tragic death of Poppi Iris Worthington between May 15 and June 8 at County Hall in Kendal.

The inquest had been due to take place over the course of three weeks in October last year.

But it was called off with just days to go to allow experts within the Crown Prosecution Service to re-examine their decision not to bring forward criminal charges in the 13-month-old's case.

Poppi was found collapsed and injured at her home in Barrow in the early hours of the morning on December 12, 2012.

She died at Furness General Hospital a short while later.

In January last year, High Court Judge Mr Justice Jackson ruled the little girl had suffered a serious sexual assault at the hands of her father, 48-year-old supermarket worker Paul Worthington, in the moments before her death.

No-one has ever been brought to book over the death following a botched investigation by Cumbria Police.

Mr Worthington denies any wrongdoing in relation to his daughter.
