A boxer from Askam is hoping to end on a high as he approaches his retirement.

Lee Kellett, aged 45, travelled to Germany over the weekend and earned himself a second round stoppage victory.

The fight was the first stop on what it is becoming a farewell tour for Lee with the prospect of hanging up the gloves getting harder to ignore.

He said: "Because of my age they thought I was an easy victory.

"It was an awful weekend because I had my bag lost by the airport so spent the day tracking around Strasbourg finding replacement gear to box in, then I went straight to the venue, changed and got in the ring.

"After all the trouble, I got the win which was the main thing and we move on to Hungary in May."

Boxing has grown to be a staple part of Kellett's life having now been involved in the sport for over three decades.

"I've been boxing since I was 11 and turned pro in 2006 and boxed as a journeyman as I enjoyed boxing and making money and I wasn't fussed about selling tickets so it was perfect, but every now and then I like to rip the script up and win," he said.

"I have a four-fight contract before I finally retire, although no-one believes me when I say I'll go through with it."

The main thing for Lee is to go out with a bang rather than a whimper, which his recent triumphs suggests he has every chance of doing.

He added: "I'm grateful I can still do this to any level so I'm ending it my way - a little world tour.

"That's Germany done, then Hungary, Germany again in June and then I finish at home in Manchester where hopefully I get to finish with my friends watching."
