A historic cinema in Ulverston has teased its new look as scaffolding, which has been up for around eight months, is coming down piece by piece.

The Roxy Collective has been busy working on the first phase of repairs and renovations on the Roxy Cinema, which dates back to 1937.

Thanks to donations from the local community, general public, private donors and various funding bodies, the collective was able to buy the Ulverston building to restore it back to life.

This will include opening up previously closed-off areas to the general public.

The first phase of the renovation works has focused on the exterior which has gotten a re-vamp by Ulverston's own Chris Dorning - an artist who was a contestant on Landscape Artist Of The Year.

In February, the old canopy was removed with solar panels installed on the roof.

This fulfilled the collective's objectives of making certain aspects of the building greener, energy efficient and more sustainable.

The Mail: The scaffolding took much of the day to erectNow, complete with a re-designed logo, the Roxy is slowly being unveiled as the scaffolding is removed, along with a new roof fixed and important structural repairs completed.

Roxy Cinema boss Charles Morris said: "One can plainly see the decoration through the scaffolding and it already looks fantastic. The Roxy always looked like the poor relation compared with the Coro but from now on both buildings will be a good advertisement for Ulverston.

"The appearance of the building can only attract custom and I'm looking forward to increased patronage.  It is a great relief that the Roxy Collective now owns the building and has such positive ideas."

The majority of the new paintwork and colour scheme is also finished and ,once the scaffolding is fully down, the exterior walls on the ground floor and entrance section will get a fresh coat as well.

Collective members have also hinted at more exciting news and big changes to come very soon.
