BARROW pupils have tasted sweet success with jams and crumbles made from fruits they have grown.

Year Two children from Dane Ghyll Primary School had lots of fun making strawberry and raspberry jams and rhubarb Gruffalo crumble.

The Barrow school, which is highly decorated with gardening honours, had a bumper amount of strawberries and raspberries growing in the garden this year, so the children picked them, weighed them, added sugar and made delicious jams.

The children sorted the fruit and weighed it using their maths skills. They also wrote out the recipe and decorated them with design using literacy and creative skills.

Once the jam was set, the pupils made sandwiches.

Next, the children picked rhubarb from the gardens. They washed it, cut it added sugar and made crumbles.

As the children were reading and learning about The Gruffalo , by author Julia Donaldson, they added Gruffalo features to the crumble.

The children took advantage of the glorious sunshine and sat outside in the rose and sensory gardens eating their sandwiches, and the crumble accompanied by ice-cream.

School gardening volunteer, Louise Postlethwaite said: "Once again the children have enjoyed eating the crops they have grown in our self-sufficient school gardens. Watching the fruits grow, harvesting, cooking them and eating them teaches the children valuable skills for the future."
