Walney Central 20 Ulverston 14

WALNEY claimed the CJS Cars Barrow and District KO Cup thanks to a late Ethan Furness try at Craven Park.

Cents snatched victory from determined opponents Ulverston, who had twice fought back from being behind to draw level.

Defences were on top for the first 20 minutes as both teams probed for an attacking chance.

It was league table-toppers Walney who opened the scoring, when slick handling saw Jake Devereaux (below) slice through the Ulverston defence. Frazer Livesey added the conversion for 6-0.

Five minutes later the Islanders increased their lead when, once again, good handling opened up the defence and substitute Dale Waite crossed for an unconverted try.

Ulverston eventually put themselves on the scoresheet as they went wide and Brad Joy sneaked in at the corner for 10-4.

Walney looked to have increased their lead, but Eddie Matcine was held up over the line.

Ulverston hit back as the industrious Matt Dean snatched a loose ball to race over from the halfway line and Liam Whinfield slotted the conversion on the stroke of half-time to bring the scores level.

Ten minutes into the second half, Devereaux grabbed his second try as he touched down in the corner. But Ulverston refused to lie down and Steve O’Connor side-stepped his way over from 10 metres out. The unsuccessful conversion attempt saw both teams locked at 14 points apiece.

A game which had been tense throughout between two evenly-matched and committed sides suddenly blew up. Ulverston had Tom Wilkinson sin-binned and Howard Rowley dismissed, while Walney had John Corkill sin-binned and Ben Cardell dismissed.

With two minutes remaining, a loose pass from Ulverston was scooped up by Furness, who romped over. Jack Rushton obliged with the conversion to round off the victory.

The man-of-the-match award went to Ulverston’s Wilkinson.
