BARROW’S old rugby league campaigners will be back in action this weekend with the start of the masters season.

The Barrow Masters side – made up of former players aged 35 and over – host Leeds Masters at Redwaters on Sunday (noon kick-off).

The game is the first of a series of events for the Barrow side over the coming month, with the experienced old heads facing a number of tasks.

They will take a team to the North West Festival at Wigan St Jude’s on Saturday, April 2, before hosting the Cumbrian Masters Festival, again at Roose’s Redwaters home, on Saturday, April 16. Matches will start at 1pm.

Shaun McPoland, one of the organisers for the Barrow side, is hopeful old players will turn out in force this weekend, and said: “All ex-players are welcome to come down and see what it is all about.

“It might tempt them to pull on their boots again and participate in this social version of the greatest game.”
