ALEX Brown, Adam Batty and Jordan Ashton all ran in hat-tricks as Roose Pioneers marked their return to the Barrow and District League with a 62-12 triumph over Ulverston A.

The hosts were on the back foot early on at Redwaters as Ulverston managed three repeat sets. However, they were unable to get through and full-back Brown did well in dealing with some astute kicks.

It was Brown who then opened the scoring as Roose broke out, going over in the corner and Batty slotting the conversion from the touchline.

Ryan Cunningham was bundled into touch as he went for the line, but there was no stopping Batty when he snapped up a loose ball and raced in from 50 metres for another converted score.

Batty went from scorer to provider, setting up Cunningham for an unconverted try out wide.

Batty’s second try followed when he was put through by Danny White, along with converting, and he was then sent clear by Russ Birch for his third after the latter had drawn the Ulverston full-back. The conversion put Pioneers 34-0 up at half time and they pushed further in front with the introduction of Ashton from the bench, who scooted over following a quick play-the-ball from Corne Els. Cunningham’s second try followed when he benefited from some good ball movement and Ashton made it two for himself as well when Els provided the assist, with Batty’s conversion taking Roose past the half-century mark.

Josh Hampton got in on the act with a converted try as well, but Ulverston did manage to get themselves on the board soon after through Will Coles. Ashton completed the try-scoring for Roose with his third of the game and Batty slotted over his ninth conversion to put the seal on the win, but Ulverston had the final word when Johnson got a second for the visitors.
