NINE-O – top of the shop – is the highest number on a bingo card. And it was the number achieved by Barrow Island who ran up their biggest ever score in defeating Stanley Rangers 90-12 at Rating Lane.

Island were on fire as they over-ran National Conference Division Three bottom club Stanley.

All credit to the Wakefield side, who despite having a leaky defence, played some bright, attacking rugby until the final whistle ended their misery.

The Yorkshiremen arrived with only fifteen players, and it was evident why they are rooted at the foot of the table, with the poorest points for and against record.

Aiden Wright led the try-fest with a hat-trick, as the Island crossed the whitewash on sixteen occasions.

Wright also added twelve conversions missing only three, while Jack Sutherland brought the ninety points up with the final kick.

It took only seven minutes before the onslaught got under way, Blain Marwood racing in after Sam Jones had swooped upon a kick downfield, with Wright tagging on the goal.

Two minutes later and it was Jones touching down from sixty yards out after good handling along the line, Wright adding the goal.

On 12 minutes it was 18-0 as Marwood shot over from close range, Wright goaling.

On their first raid Stanley failed to score after a stab over the home line was booted dead. A counter-attack saw Marwood held up at the other end.

Wright was soon to cross courtesy of neat play from Ian Irvine and Jake Stockdale. Wright added the extra two from the touchline. Another raid saw Stockdale once more the provider for Wright to slide over in the corner.

On the half hour Marwood again caught the defence napping, going in from close range. The touchline kick from Wright sailed between the posts.

Stockdale was next on the scoresheet as he swooped on a kick ahead from the boot of Jones. Wright added the goal.

On the stroke of half-time there was joy for the visitors at last with loose forward Ash Hollingsworth crossing. Sam Malley added the goal to make it 40-6.

Stanley defended well for the first ten minutes of the second half before the floodgates opened once more.

On 50 minutes Marwood ran acrossfield to send Jake Carter over for Wright to convert. Two minutes on and Marwood completed his hat-trick, going in after foxing the cover from 30 yards out, Wright goaling for 52-6.

A five-minute spell saw eighteen points on the board as Ryan Clegg tore through the cover for Stockdale to score and Wright convert.

Stanley, on a rare attack, went in for a try from Josh Allonby which was converted by Malley.

Sutherland then touched down, crashing over from close range, Wright adding the goal.

It was soon 70-12 with Carter sending Clegg between the posts, and Wright adding the conversion.

Stockdale and Carter worked the ball left for Wright to complete his hat-trick.

Jones then sent Jon Walsh streaking over before Ben Garner raced through a gap – Wright adding one goal for 84-12.

And it was Walsh touching down for try number sixteen after sweeping on to a long ball from Marwood. Sutherland called time with the kick.
