KRIS Tyson came to the rescue as the Villagers fended off a late rally from East Leeds to win 34-22 at Fallowfield Park.

The scoreline was 28-22 in Askam’s favour going into the closing minutes, with the Yorkshire side piling on the pressure.

With one minute left on the clock a Leeds attack broke down with a dropped ball. Tyson swooped to race in from 40 yards and he tagged on the goal to complete the scoring.

The victory moves Dave Clark’s side into second place in the National Conference Division Two with St Jude’s losing at leaders Stanningley. Askam face a trip to St Judes this weekend.

It was a close game throughout, with the visitors applying the early pressure, but it was the home side who were to go ahead on nine minutes.

Mike Wilson and Tom Hopkins linked for Russ Bolton to cut inside and touch down.

Leeds were soon to respond with prop Lee Fisher being hauled down by four defenders under the posts.

From the play the ball Ash Holmes forced his way over, with Tim Norfolk adding the goal to edge them in front.

Play was end to end with Askam going close through Zac Steel. He raced for the line but was pulled back after the pass from Kier Shepherd was adjudged forward.

At the other end, following a counter-attack, Norfolk was held short.

Holmes was then hauled down by five defenders before a stab through from Danny Gray was pushed dead.

On the next raid Gray was held up over the line as the home side defended stoutly. Six minutes from the break Askam regained the lead when Tyson mesmerised the Leeds cover as he went one way then the other to race in from halfway. He also tagged on the goal points for 10-6. However, four minutes into the second period Easts were back in front following a tap penalty for holding down in the tackle.

James Lawson went close before Gray went over the line to score, with Norfolk converting.

Their joy was short-lived however as within two minutes Askam were ahead.

Liam Saunders burst through on halfway and on his shoulder to pull clear was Jake Spedding, with Tyson adding the goal for 6-12.

Spedding was soon over the whitewash again when a high ball from Tyson bounced nicely for the second row forward, but offside was ruled.

But there was no stopping Hopkins minutes later, with Tyson’s goal making it 22-12.

The score then went to 28-12 with Russ Bolton racing through a gap to touch down after good work from Hopkins and Wilson. Tyson added the goal.

However, Leeds refused to give up the chase and impressive left centre James Duckworth scored out wide, with Norfolk adding the goal for 28-18. Lawson added a further unconverted try for 28-22, prior to Tyson’s late clincher.

Askam are back in action at Craven Park on Wednesday when they take on Walney Central in the Barton Townley Cup final (7pm kick-off).

Elsewhere, Barrow Island won 22-20 at Dewsbury Celtic, with tries coming from Ben Garner, 2, Dan White and Blain Marwood, plus two goals from Aide Wright.

In the Barrow and District League ex-Raiders player Steve Neale brought the curtain down on a great career with Roose Pioneers as he helped them defeat Ulverston 12-6.
