JOE Satterthwaite came off the bench and within minutes was touching down for a match-winning try as Askam defeated promotion rivals Wigan St Judes 12-4 at Fallowfield Park.

The young half-back shrugged off a long-standing shoulder injury to seal victory to take the Villagers on level points with Judes in Division Two of the National Conference.

It was a tough 80 minutes for both teams with the final result always in the balance.

The home side were almost off to a dream start when Sam Dowsett chipped through the Judes cover in the first minute.

Mark Tyson followed up to touch down, only for the home skipper to be ruled offside.

Judes came back strongly, with dangerous centre Paul Pendlebury making a fine break, only to fall to the cover.

And when Greg McMahon chipped through Russ Bolton smothered the ball.

Further pressure from the visitors saw Luke Barrett held up.

Askam survived with a counter-attack only for Mike Wilson to send out a poor pass to Mark Tyson.

It was nip and tuck, with Askam doing most of the defending with strength.

As the game progressed Askam came more into the frame in attack.

Wilson kicked ahead for Tom Wilkinson to gather but a fine tackle from scrum half Joe Roper halted his progress.

More pressure saw Jackson and Kris Tyson link to send Tyler Carter heading for the line but four defenders hauled him down.

At the other end McMahon tried to stab the ball through the cover, only for Russ Bolton pick up and go 70 yards with six Judes players in pursuit before Connor Pearson hauled him down.

On the stroke of half-time the deadlock was broken in Askam’s favour.

Quick hands from several players enabled Mark Tyson to cut inside and touch down, brother Kris adding the goal points for 6-0.

Within two minutes of the restart Judes were touching down only for prop Tom Owen being denied a score due to a forward pass.

But a minute later Pearson had points on the board with an unconverted try.

It was end to end and on 64 minutes Kris Tyson made good yards for Dowsett to send Sattherthwaite crashing over by the posts, Tyson tagging on the goal.

Grady Slater, on his return from rugby union, was having a strong game for the Villagers who held out in the closing minutes with some stout defending.
