CONNOR McDermott’s five tries helped Hindpool Tigers win a thrilling CJS Knockout Cup tie against Walney Central 40-36.

Hindpool were 36-16 up, having led 24-16 at half time, 15 minutes into the second half but Walney came back and it was a late try which sealed Tigers’ victory.

McDermott was the Hindpool hero, while Ben Hughes and Conner Goodings - who also kicked six goals - were their other try-scorers.

Jake Devlin went in for four tries for Walney, with Carl Munro (2) and Brad Nichols getting over as well, and George Nichols kicking four goals.

Hindpool play Dalton in the semi-finals, who came out tops with a strong second half performance against Askam.

The Villagers took the lead against the run of play when Brad Kavanagh took a ball five yards from the try-line and crashed over to score, followed Dillon Burkett converting.

Five minutes before half-time, Dalton drew level when Harri Brown crossed to score and Jack Stevenson converted.

The Kelland Park outfit were soon on the scoresheet in the second half when Jack Gedling put them 10-6 up and more pressure saw them increase their lead when Tom Sharpe went over to score.

Askam came back at Dalton and when after some good forward play Stuart High found a gap in the Dalton defence to go over, along with converting to narrow the gap to two points.

But then Dalton’s Jack Gordon kicked through and regathered to go over the whitewash to score, with Stevenson adding the extras.

And with five minutes left, Brown sealed the win as he outstripped the Askam cover to go 90 yards for a try.

Both Barrow Island and Ulverston failed to raise teams, so Millom and Roose Pioneers will face off in the other semi-final at Askam.

Dalton travel to Hindpool tonight, with the hosts sure to have their tails up after last week’s victory over Walney.

But Dalton are a young side, who like to throw the ball about, and will put Tigers to the test if they keep going for the full 80 minutes.

Barrow and District League champions Roose are expected to be too strong for Millom at Fallowfield Park, but to get to the semi-final is a great feat for Millom, who have just come back into the league this season.
