THE Furness Tile and Flooring Barrow and District League title is still up for grabs heading into tonight’s fixtures, writes JEFF COWARD.

Second-placed Askam host Ulverston on the back of a win over Barrow Island which kept their hopes alive and denied the Rating Lane side the crown with games to spare.

Askam are in great form – now four points back of top spot – and have home advantage at Fallowfield Park, but Ulverston will be full of confidence after their success against Walney seven days ago. It is a match that is hard to predict.

Askam’s 34-22 win over Barrow Island came in a fast, open game.

Island were first to score, when Harry Mellen touched down. but Askam hit back to go in at half-time leading 22-10.

Tom Askew had three tries for Askam, with Brad Kavanagh, Dave Finlayson and Brad Jackson also crossing the whitewash. Jackson landed five goals.

For the Island, Shane Sanderson went in for two tries, with Gareth Shaw and Dave Carter also touching down. Carter landed one goal.

Ulverston head to Askam after moving off the bottom of the league with a thumping 60-18 victory over Walney.

They were too strong all round, with Marty Storey (3), Mike Reeks (2), Mike Kevitt (2), Kieron Porter, Andy Benson and Brad Williamson the try-scorers. Williamson kicked eight goals.

Declan Gavin scored a hat-trick for Cents, with Matty McKee kicking one goal and Tom Lamb two.

Tonight’s other game sees Dalton travel to Walney in a mid-table clash.

A Dalton win would move them into fourth, above Roose Pioneers, but Walney will have a point to prove after last week’s heavy defeat.
