ROOSE Pioneers enjoyed a great few days in the Barrow and District competition, with victories in the league and cup within a few days.

The league season kicked off last week, but only two games were possible due to adverse weather conditions.

With Kelland Park unfit, Dalton switched their home game against Pioneers to Redwaters, and what a thriller it turned out to be.

It was Pioneers who got their season up and running with a 38-26 victory. There was lots of experience in the Roose side and that shone through.

Joint-player/coach Chris Larkin led the way with two tries, and there was also a brace of touchdowns from another of the club’s player/coaches, Mike Backhouse.

Ade White also scored twice, and Shaun Mason and Sam Doyle also crossed the whitewash, with Adam Batty landing three goals.

Dalton did not throw the towel in, and their tries were scored by Scott Paisley, Corey Smurthwaite, and Jack Carter, plus a brace from Joe Carter, who also added three goals.

On Tuesday, Pioneers earned another victory – this time defeating Hindpool Tigers 26-16 in the Frank Reid Cup.

Once again, White was among the tries, touching down twice. Rhys Studt (2), Ronnie Neale and Will Mallinson also touched down, and Lee Starkie kicked a goal. For Hindpool, Connor McDermott and Grant Burns were the try-scorers, and Connor Goodings kicked four goals.

Walney travelled to Askam in the league and were beaten 36-22. Cents had led for long periods, but two late tries sealed their fate. Sam Broadley (3), Aiden Wilson (2), Grady Slater and James Wallis were the Askam try-scorers, with Wallis kicking three goals.

For Walney, Mike Elliott (2), Jamie Marshall, John Thompson, Cameron Heighton, Ross Cottam and Dan Johnson scored the tries, with two goals from Tom Lamb.

Barrow Island play Walney in the semi-finals of the Barton Townley Cup on Wednesday at Craven Park.

The Barrow and District and Cumbria County are looking for the following coaching positions: Under-17s head and assistant coach; Under-19s head and assistant coach; open-age head and assistant coach.
