BARROW Island pulled out all the stops to knock the smiles off Clock Face Miners with an emphatic 44-12 victory at Rating Lane.

The result means Island go third ahead of the St Helens side in National Conference League Division Three, one place behind Millom.

Fresh from their drawn game with leaders Beverley last week, Clock Face started strongly going ahead 6-0 on seven minutes. However, they failed to add to their tally until the finals seconds when they crossed for a converted try – in between, Island had rattled 44 points into them.

Island were almost off to a perfect start when, in the first minute, Blain Marwood sent Sam Jones into space. The full-back made good yards before sending a ball back inside which went to ground.

Then came disaster as a fine attack came to an abrupt end; a Jake Carter pass on the visitors' 25-metre line was intercepted by his opposite number Jack Highcock, who raced downfield to touch down and also tagged on the goal.

Island came back strongly though, with Carter testing the Miners with some high balls and it was the home stand-off who sent Peter Rimmer to the line, but he was held up.

And when a forecful drive saw Jack Sutherland head for the posts he lost possession. But there was no stopping Marwood on 22 minutes as he darted in from 25 yards unopposed from a play the ball, with Carter adding the goal.

Clock Face then pounded the home line but great defence kept them at bay Luke Forber almost crossed but he knocked on a foot short. A counter attack saw Island go ahead when Jonathan Walsh raced in from 35 yards, Carter adding the goal 12-6.

The visitors came back again with pressure on the Island line, but there was no way through as Highcock was held inches short followed by Andy Stanton knocking on.

On 35 minutes, Island increased their lead when Carter brought Jones into the attack and he sent a slick of a pass to Aiden Wright, who cut inside then out again to score, despite the attention of two defenders.

On the stroke of half time, Carter sent out a neat ball to Ben Garner who went in at the corner to make it 20-6 at the break.

The second half was barely under way when Clock Face, trying to clear their line, lost the ball and Peter Rimmer picked up for an easy try, with Carter converting.

Island were now rampant, stretching their lead at to 26 points – Joe Spenceley the provider for Josh Banham to score, followed by Carter tagging on the extra two. Marwood then caught the away side napping, going in from close range from a tap penalty, with Carter again converting.

The Miners worked hard for points, but getting through the home cover was proving difficult. With three minutes left, Island's Scott Hadwin sent Jones into space for a try converted by Carter.

As the clock ticked towards 80 minutes though, young and hard-working Miners winger Alex Burke raced upfield to send Jordan Cresser in by the posts, with Forber converting to make the final score 44-12.

Islands assistant coach Shaun Corrie sends the clubs best wishes to Danny Wright, who will be side-lined for 18 months after damaging his ACL.

Ulverston went top of Division Two in the North West Men's League, two points ahead and with two games in hand on Manchester Rangers. They came back from Wigans St Judes 40-20 victors.

Leading the way was Connor Saunders with a hat-trick of tries and six goals. Other tries came from Matt Storey (2), Marc Storey and Liam Winfield.

Walney Central were out of luck in their cup clash with Heyshan Atoms, played at Kirkby Lonsdale, losing out 38-24 after being level 14-14 at the break. Tries came from Adam Nicholson (2), Liam Wright and Jamie Morrow. Four goals came via Jordan Staffieri.
