INSPIRATIONAL Barrow wheelchair basketball ace Tyler Baines has scooped another major award.

The 16-year-old won the Sporting Achievement prize in the 13-17 year-old category at the Northern Children of Courage Awards in Newcastle.

Tyler was nominated for the awards by Cumbria Wheelchair Sports Club's Carlisle Panthers team, who he stars for on the basketball court.

After being shortlisted for the final three, Tyler travelled to Newcastle to take part in a video shoot telling his story.

The Baines family attended the glitzy awards ceremony at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead hotel this month, an event run by the St James' Place Charitable Foundation.

And they were were naturally delighted when it was announced Tyler had won, with dad Mark saying: “As a family we are chuffed to bits and bursting with pride for what Tyler has achieved.”

The award is another feather in the cap for Tyler, whose previous achievements include helping the CWSC Panthers claim national gold, and winning the Be Inspired Award at the 2014 Cumbria Sports Awards.

The two teams Tyler plays for have enjoyed great success on the court this season, with Carlisle Panthers' first team being promoted into the national Premier Division and the second team sealing back-to-back promotions in the last two years.

The Walney School pupil has a busy few months ahead as he is set to play for the North West under-19s team at the national championships and also has trials for England North ahead of the national school games.
