IT has been a busy period locally, with a few of the major events of the season taking place.

One of my favourites to play in was the Hodson Trophy, where the local clubs put their best golfers against one another and play for the cup.

This year’s event was held last Sunday at Grange Over Sands and, testament to the green staff, the course was playable after the flooding it has been subjected to this year.

Furness put in a strong challenge, but fell one shot short to the joint-winners, Barrow and Ulverston, with Ulverston’s Luke Walker taking the individual prize on the day.

Luke has also won the Club Championship at Ulverston for a third year running and is finishing the season off a new plus-2 handicap.

At Furness, Rob Leitch became club champion for the second year in succession and Dennis Crabtree and Tony Mason claimed the biggest prize of the season by winning the Zone Golf Open, with an amazing 49 points.

At Barrow, Mike Batstone put some indifferent form behind him to win the Masters Trophy. Scores of 67 and 68 were enough to see his name on the trophy.

Well played to all the winners and, with the season-ending Ryder Cup to look forward to, there is still some golf to be played and a few more chances to get your handicap cut.

Have a good golfing weekend.
