THE first honours of the Deltawaite Ltd Furness Senior Citizens’ League season were decided when Hawcoat Park A claimed the George Barrow Memorial Cup by beating Co-op SC at Glaxo.

The game took place in ideal conditions on a quick Glaxo green, and following the first four games the sides at won two games each and were level on chalks.

But Hawcoat took the initiative in the final four games to establish a winning margin of 19 chalks. John Gill and Dave Hodgson were prominent for the winners, whilst Ian Sim showed up well for the Co-op.

The presentation of the trophy was made by George Barrow (Jr) to the winning Captain Jimmy Bawden.

In Division One, Hawcoat's A-team followed up their cup success with a 10-0 defeat of Walney Park A. The significance of the result was Hawcoat, who are currently third bottom, cannot be caught by Walney, who occupy bottom place.

Having gained promotion last season from Division Two, Walney's stay as been a brief one as they make a return there for 2019. Both league Leaders Hawcoat Park and second-placed Co-op suffered 7-3 defeats at the hands of King Alfred and Ulverston Cons respectively.

Second-bottom West Mount still have an outside chance of survival. However, their prospects diminished somewhat following a 9-2 home defeat at the hands of Askam.

Another side to win away from home were Roose Community, winning 8-3 at Walney Park. Having won five of the eight games they took the aggregate points by a single chalk.

Lindal, as usual, proved a difficult place to win and this week it was the turn of West Shore to stuggle on the Pennington Lane Green, going down 7-3 in the process.

Dalton CC benefited from home advantage when beating Kirkby 7-3. The closest game was at Salthouse where the hosts shared the games 4-4 with Barrow Island, but securing the aggregate points gave them a 6-4 win.

In Division Two, leaders Co-op A proved too strong for their B team, winning 8-2 to maintain a 22-point lead over nearest rivals Barrow Island A. For their part, the Old Barrow side won 9-1 against Dalton CC A.

Third-placed Glaxo, despite having a fine 7-3 win against fourth-placed King Alfred, find the gap widening to eight points. With each side having only four games left it looks as though it will be Barrow Island who will join the Co-op in winning promotion.

North Scale had a comfortable win against Salthouse A, preventing them picking up a point in the process. Another side to win 10-0 were Askam A when hosting Walney Park B.

The remaining games saw Roose A and West Shore A pick up wins against West Mount A and Hawcoat Park C respectively.
