POLICE achieved what none of their Sharples Lettings Furness and District Bowling League Division One title rivals title have managed, returning as victors from Salthouse.

Mark Johnson and Stewart Turnbull were the cornerstones of a fine 11-4 result, both winning 21-8, with Andy Woods reciprocating the score for the hosts.

Despite terrific triumphs of 21-4 from Gary Hall and 21-7 from Martin Barrow, leaders King Alfred went down 9-5 at Co-op, where Darren Naylor carded a fine 21-7 score for the Dane Avenue outfit, well supported by Daves Ryder and Jackson, both 21-9.

Only a point separates the top two, and the title looks destined to go to the wire.

King Alfred have Lindal, Dalton CC and Post Office to play at home, with away games at Askam and Red River.

Police visit Co-op, Askam and Dalton CC, as well as hosting Hawcoat Park and Lindal.

Both teams are unbeaten at home and have identical records, having won 14 and lost four matches, but the game that could decide the destiny of the trophy, is the penultimate match of the season, on September 14, when Police host King Alfred.

Askam only managed three winners at Lindal, but scores of 21-5 from Richard Wearing and 21-8 from Graham Rigg caught the eye.

Dalton Cricket Club’s four-match winning run was ended at Hawcoat Park, where Roger Barrow triumphed 21-4 and Paul Cain 21-9.

Roose Community had a good 8-6 success over neighbours Red River to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive. Strengthened by the reappearance of James Duffin (21-7) after a three-month absence and recent signing Chris Whitehouse, 21-4, Roose will be hoping for a big result at home to King Alfred A this weekend.

Captain Brian Beard’s 21-9 success failed to prevent Post Office going down 8-6 at Walney Park.

Division Two bottom club North Scale had a welcome first victory in six matches, beating Kirkby A 10-4. Keith Hurley, 21-6, and Tommy Quayle, 21-8, were the men in form.

Arthur Adams, 21-3, Ron Wilson, 21-7, and Nigel Burns, 21-9, ensured Police A took the vital aggregate points after the games had been shared with Salthouse A.

Terry Fitzsimmons was best for Roose Community A as they beat Barrow Island 10-5, while Peter Roberts, 21-7, and Jimmy Johnson, 21-8, helped King Alfred B to the same scoreline at Hawcoat Park B.

Geoff Langhorn won 21-5 for Dalton CC A, but replies of 21-6 from Stuart Urmston and 21-9s from Paul McHugh and Dave Harwood produced another 10-5 away result for Co-op SC A.

Leaders Glaxo SC went down 9-5 at West Shore, where Paul Wrathall had a 21-6 score, but the works side still managed to increase their lead at the top to 10 points after Hawcoat Park A lost 10-4 at Askam A, with Norman Milburn winning 21-9.

Steve Thwaites and Keith Nixon both triumphed 21-9 as Division Three leaders West Mount A collected 11 points at home to Hawcoat Park C.

Anthony Brown’s 21-9 scoreline resulted in Barrow Island A taking the aggregate by nine chalks and the match 9-6 after the games were shared at Glaxo SC A.

Ronnie Carroll won 21-6, but saw Salthouse B lose 10-4 at Co-op SC B. Wins by Terry Weir, 21-6, Mike White, 21-7, and Steve Pryer, 21-8, paid dividends for Co-op.

For the second successive home match, Bill Dodding prevented a dry rub for Walney Park B. West Shore A took the match 14-1, with Dave Leach and Fred Myerscough their leading men.
