CUMBRIA Ladies pulled out all the stops to claim a strong victory against a good North Shropshire side.

A battling away display and a confident home showing saw them take the overall aggregate by five chalks to take the victory.

The away side were taken to a tricky green in Whitchurch, the surface a combination of those the team members often play on at Lindal, North Scale and Ulverston Cons.

Cumbria played it well, winning six of the 12 games but losing the aggregate by 39 chalks.

The best score came from Elaine Ryland, with a 21-14 triumph, followed by Caroline Bushell and Barbara Low, both 21-15, Wendy Holmes, 21-17, and Sandra Rigg, 21-18.

Emma Thornton, playing last at number 12, had an exceptional result, coming from 15-12 down to win 21-17 in a game that enthralled the spectators.

On the home green at Levens, Cumbria also shared the games 6-6 with their North Shropshire visitors.

With the last two games to be played, the hosts were behind overall by 10 chalks, but an outstanding 21-3 win from Gill Balderstone, and a narrow 21-17 defeat for Violet Dennison gave them overall victory by five chalks.

Other excellent single-figure winners for the home side were Anne Anderson, 21-7, and Jane Glaister and Doreen Robinson, both 21-9.

Laraine Keating, 21-14, and Thelma McBratney, 21-18, were the other victors in well-deserved triumph.
