GLAXO SC took advantage of a third defeat of the season for Hawcoat Park A to return to the summit of Sharples Lettings Furness and District Bowling League Division Two.

The Ulverston side won 10-5 against North Scale, while Hawcoat suffered a 9-5 loss against Co-op SC A.

At Dane Avenue, Paul McHugh was best for the hosts, with John Stewart returning a similar score for the losers, who despite losing 7-5 on games were only four chalks short of collecting some aggregate points.

Co-op A have impressive home form, winning all eight home games to date, and collecting 86 points.

Kirkby A proved too strong for Salthouse A, beating them 12-2, with Ivor Broome winning 21-4, Trevor and Shaun Taylor both 21-5, and Roy Bainbridge and Jack Park, both 21-7. Eleven-year-old Park has claimed all seven of his Furness League matches this term, and looks an outstanding prospect.

Barrow Island had their third away success of the season, 9-6 at Police A, to move four points clear of their rivals. Alan Postlethwaite, 21-6, Dave Dent, 21-7, and Steve Hunter and Joe O’Leary, both 21-9, gave the team scores to boast about.

Brian Chelton took his game 21-6 and Paul Knott 21-8, as West Shore left Hawcoat Park B as 9-6 victors.

Billy Caulfield’s 21-6 scoreline was not enough to prevent King Alfred B losing 9-5 at Askam A, who had Norman Milburn, 21-8, and Bill Askew, 21-9, in top form.

With Colin Norman triumphing 21-9, Dalton CC A secured the aggregate points after sharing the games at home to Roose Community A.

King Alfred retained the bragging rights after beating their A-team 10-5 to extend their lead at the top of Division One to nine points after Police had a bye.

The A-team gained some consolation, as they claimed three more points than when the sides met earlier in the season. Barry Lowden, 21-4, and Martin Barrow, 21-9, were the men in form.

Third-placed Lindal made a valiant effort at Salthouse.

Scores of 21-4 from Danny Rogers and 21-5 from Jim Weston helped the hosts take the opening four games and a massive 46-chalk advantage. Lindal won six of the next seven to lead 6-5 and reduce the aggregate deficit to only four chalks, but Allan Asbury beat Paul Kissock 21-10 to clinch an 8-6 win for the Raglan Street side.

Hawcoat Park hosted neighbours Co-op SC, with Mike Proctor winning 21-9 on his return. Ian Sim bettered that score, triumphing 21-7 to help the visitors clinch the aggregate by three chalks and the match 9-6. It was a first home defeat of the season for last year’s champions.

Despite Chris Corkill winning 21-3 and Paul Lewis 21-8, Roose Community trail King Alfred A by 13 points at the foot of the division.

After seven successive defeats, wins by Steve Davey, 21-5, Alan Haines, 21-6, Gareth Jones, 21-7, and Neil Jones, 21-8, helped Dalton CC move 20 points above the relegation place.

Paul Millburn, 21-6, and Paul Gauntlett, 21-8, could not stop Walney Park losing 11-4 at home to Askam, while Jordan Park won 21-8 as Red River went down 9-5 at Post Office.

Division Three leaders Walney Park A had a mixed week, whitewashing Hawcoat Park C 14-0 then going down 12-2 at fellow promotion contenders West Mount A.

Mike Davey won 21-6 in the whitewash, while Steve Lackey was on top by the same score at Abbey Road, where David Hawkrigg, 21-8, and Steve Holmes, 21-9, excelled for the hosts.

Red River A are still in with a shout of finishing top, following their 12-2 demolition of Co-op SC B.

They are 15 points behind the leaders, but have two matches in hand, after sterling showings by James Jackson and Dave Bell, 21-6, Dave Pullin, 21-7, and Richard Hall, 21-9.

Barrow Island A had a fine 10-4 victory against West Mount, with Dave Dent, 21-3, Derek Heron, 21-6, Keith Wilson, 21-7 and Jamie Humphrey, 21-8, doing the damage. Mike Boulton, 21-7, was best for Mount.

Les Tallon, 21-7, made it a hat-trick since his return to bowling to help Glaxo SC A beat Salthouse B 10-4.

Trevor McCall, 21-1, had the week's biggest win, with support from John Shipley, 21-6, giving West Shore A a 9-5 success over Hawcoat Park C, who had splendid replies of 21-5 from Frank Ratcliffe and 21-9 from Norman Parker.

For the second consecutive weekend, Roose Community B were only able to field nine players. They took four of those games, but it was not enough to prevent them losing 10-4 at Walney Park B, who had fine scores of 21-4 from Ray Visick and 21-6 from Barry Holland.
