FURNESS slipped further behind leaders Cleator in the North Lancs and Cumbria League title race after losing heavily to the West Cumbrians.

The Premier Division’s top two sides met at Furness Park on Saturday in a game reduced to 90 overs – and it was Cleator who emerged victorious by 129 runs.

Cleator batted first and performed well at the crease. Dave Watson, with 45, and Tom Sharpe, 36, opened with a stand of 81.

This was followed by Darren Clark making 64, Tharaka Waduge, 38, and Adam Hodgson 30 not out, as Cleator reached 238 for 5 in their 45 overs.

After tea, the Furness batting was well below their usual standard and they were all out in the 28th over for 109.

The home side’s new Indian professional Rishi Dhawan top scored with 30.

Darren Clark, with 5 for 33, and David Blackwell, 5 for 74, bowled unchanged to put Cleator well clear.

Lindal Moor found themselves on the receiving end of a league record-equalling total of 400 as Whitehaven’s Chase Young went ballistic with the bat.

Coming to the crease with his side on 0 for 1, Chase proceded to smash 245 off 127 balls, with nine sixes and 33 fours.

And with 47 from Stephen Holliday, and 38 from Dom Chambers, the visitors reached 400 for 8 at tea – the score equalling that of Keswick’s record total in 2015.

Spinner John Atkinson bowled his 15 overs to take 4 for 80.

In a very difficult position, the Moor still gave a good batting performance. Pro Keshan Wijerathna made 81, and Alastair Grunshaw, 45, but saw their side all out for 265. Whitehaven’s Habib Baloch took 4 for 74 and Jonathan Stewart, 3 for 24.

Haverigg’s poor season continues as they lost at Carlisle.

Batting first, the village were all out for 132 in the 40th over. Derval Green and Taryn Reay each took three wickets.

In reply Ben Davidson, 52 not out, and Tom Benn, 58 not out, saw Carlisle to a nine-wicket win at 133 for 1 in the 38th over.

Batting first at Cockermouth, Dalton found runs hard to get, and only skipper Liam Curwen, with 37, got into his stride as the visitors were all out in the 23rd over for 92.

Chris Hodgson, with 5 for 23, and pro Haseeb Azam, 4 for 21, did the damage.

In reply Cockermouth raced to an easy win in the 15th over, at 93 for 2, Alex Grainger making 62.

Workington had first knock against Millom, and after some recent poor displays, their batting showed a welcome return to form, with their top five batsmen all making 30-plus.

Kaushalya Gajasinghe top scored with 70 not out, and with opener Grant Reid making 55, Workington were 263 for 3 in their 50 overs.

Millom made a bad start to be 15 for 3, but professional Sameera Sadamal with 27, and Graham Dawson, 53, stopped the rot.

However, the lower order could not survive and the visitors were all out in the 41st over for 128.

Gajasinghe took 3 for 17 in 11.5 overs and Adam Chambers, 3 for 32 in nine overs.

Vickerstown had a great day as they beat Division One front-runners Egremont in a low-scoring game at Rainey Park.

Batting first, the home side were 91 all out, with Peter Lee making 39 not out and skipper Gareth Benson 26.

Egremont’s Shaun Bostock took 3 for 16 in ten overs.

Egremont struggled from the start and were all out for 81 in the 35th over. Benson ended his good day with 6 for 24.

Ulverston earned a good win at home to Seascale. The visitors batted first, and after an opening stand of 58, the remaining batsmen didn’t really build on the good start and they were all out for 168 in the last over.

Joe Hammond, 57, and Adam Brown, 37, top scored for Seascale. Gareth Yates, 3 for 32, Stuart Cooper, 3 for 37, and Paul Storey, 3 for 52, were Ulverston’s wicket-takers.

Ulverston made a determined start to their innings. David Blain was out for 29 in an opening stand of 59 with Ben Dryden who went on to make 51. Milind Metha made 67 not out, as Ulverston went to the win at 169 for 2.

Hawcoat Park had first knock at home to Furness A, and with half centuries from Callum Lucas, 52, and Dave Muncaster, 51, the home side were all out in the 49th over for 203. For Furness, Ellliot Maxfield took 4 for 55.

In reply the Furness batting was below par, with the exception of William Stanway who made 65, and the visitors were all out for 136 in the 40th over. Hawcoat’s Callum Muncaster returned 4 for 25.

Cockermouth had first knock at Kirkby. They had to work hard for runs and were 142 for 9 when overs ran out, Tom Norman making 35. Mike Etchells was again among the wickets, taking 4 for 24 in 13 overs.

Kirkby would be disappointed with their batting performance. Only Rob and Paul Fugler got into the twenties, and they were all out for 125 in the 45th over.

Andrew Dodds, 4 for 31, and Matthew Hodgson, 4 for 32, took Cockermouth to a good win.

Barrow had a good win at home to Morecambe in the Northern League Division One.

Batting first at Ernest Pass, Barrow were all out for 190 with one ball left of their 50-overs.

Professional Grant Roelofsen top scored with 75 and Ryan Gilmour made 43, with Morecambe’s Zac Buchanan taking 5 for 34.

Toby Mowat was the star of the show with the ball for Barrow, his 5 for 30 leading the way to victory.

Daryl Wearing offered good support with 3 for 18 as the visitors were shot out for 109 inside 38 overs.
