Barrow AFC recorded their fifth straight National League victory on Saturday as their remarkable run of form continued against Maidenhead at the Progression Solicitors Stadium.

A much-improved crowd of 1,401 saw goals from John Rooney and Scott Quigley earn the Bluebirds another three points which saw them maintain their place in the play-off places and close the gap on those above them.

There was just one change for the home side from Tuesday’s win at Chorley.

Jason Taylor, back from suspension, replaced Lewis Hardcastle in midfield, with Hardcastle taking Oliver Greaves’ place on the bench.

It was Barrow who started the brightest and the again impressive Olly Dyson was fouled after less than a minute, with Joseph Ellul picking up an early yellow card.

Despite a quick start the first real chance fell to Maidenhead with 25 minutes played. He found space on the edge of the box but his effort flew wide of the far post.

The Bluebirds then had a host of chances with just over half an hour played.

Ashby-Hammond saved from Olly Dyson before Josh Kay’s goal-bound effort was deflected over the bar. Scott Quigley then headed over.

Minutes later the Bluebirds took the lead. Dior Angus latched on to a through ball and was promptly taken out by the visiting goalkeeper, leaving the referee with an easy decision to point to the spot. John Rooney made no mistake to take his tally to nine goals for the season.

Barrow then had two more golden chances before the break. Scott Quigley’s effort was saved after good work from Dior Angus, before Quigley had the chance to tee Angus up but went himself, only to be tackled by a Maidenhead defender.

It isn’t unusual to see Quigley scoring early in the second half this season, and he did it again with 51 minutes played.

Great work from Man of the Match Dyson saw him find Quigley on the edge of the box, he took a touch and rifled an effort into the bottom corner.

As the second half wore on, it was the Bluebirds who continued to look the more dangerous side.

Angus had an effort saved after showing quick feet in the box, before his low cross was just about put behind for a corner ahead of the waiting Quigley.

Shortly after replacing Dyson and Angus, Lewis Hardcastle and Jack Hindle combined to force Ashby-Hammond into a great save, Hardcastle breaking into the box and pulling it back for Hindle whose low effort was tipped around the near post.

Joel Dixon had little to do over 90 minutes, but that didn’t affect his concentration as he produced a superb stop from Whitehall’s effort to keep his clean sheet intact.

With 10 minutes to play, the Bluebirds then had another penalty appeal.

Kay was teed up by Jack Hindle and, when his effort was spilled by the keeper, Byron Harrison appeared to be fouled as he went to tap the ball into the empty net, the referee however waved play on.

The full-time whistle sounded to a chorus of cheers from the home crowd, another superb performance from Barrow who made it look easy at times.

Next up, is a tough trip to early league leaders Bromley next Saturday.
