Barrow AFC manager Ian Evatt believes his side’s new reputation of being fast starters in games is as a result of the attacking ethos he has instilled during his time in charge.

John Rooney’s seventh-minute opener in last Saturday’s 3-0 win against Solihull Moors was the third time this season the Bluebirds have scored in the first ten minutes, while there have been two further occasions they’ve struck by the time 20 were on the clock.

Evatt will be keen to see AFC start on the front foot in tomorrow’s contest at Ebbsfleet United, who will be desperate for a result themselves, as they look to lift themselves off the bottom of the National League.

Given how frequently they’ve been creating chances so far this season, Barrow will be confident of doing something they didn’t manage against the Fleet last year, which is find the net.

Evatt said: “We are fast starters because we’re a fearless football team. It’s how I see the game should be played.

“You win football matches by scoring more than the opposition, not necessarily by keeping clean sheets. The way I see the game is that it’s in the entertainment industry and supporters need to be entertained.

“They spend a lot of their hard-earned money to watch football matches nowadays, so I want the supporters who pay a lot of money out of their salaries to come and watch us to feel like they’re enjoying it.

“If we can play with that fearless attacking nature, then hopefully that is enjoyable to them and we can get the right results and if we can start games quickly and get in front then it makes it harder for the opposition.

“That means they have to come and attack us and then hopefully we can pick them off with our pace and speed going forward.”

Barrow head down the 313 miles to Stonebridge Road with their confidence restored after winning their last two games and given their opponents’ tough start to the season they will be expected to make it three wins in a row at the weekend.

Evatt said: “Our expectation levels have changed from last season inside our changing room, where we expect to win every game.

“We have to have that belief - that’s no different on this Saturday and that’s no disrespect to our opposition, but I have full belief in my players that if they perform to the levels they can, they can beat anybody in this division.

“I think it’s right that we have this belief and hopefully we can go there on Saturday and be consistent with what we do and get the three points that we need.”

Although the Bluebirds won’t take their next two opponents - Ebbsfleet and Chorley - lightly, the next week does represent a real chance for them to climb the table and well and truly put their disappointing August behind them.

“Football always gives you another opportunity - I’ve always said that - and we’ve got an opportunity now to get ourselves back in the pack, where we want to be,” Evatt said.

“There are no prizes given out in August or September, but certainly we can go a long way towards progressing to where we want to be and hopefully we can stay in that pack then.

“I genuinely believe that we’ve turned a corner and believe that the players are starting to see and believe in what we’re doing. It’s just about getting everyone to buy into what we’re doing.”
