Barrow AFC manager Ian Evatt was pleased to see his side grit out the result against Yeovil Town, after Scott Quigley’s goal gave them a 1-0 win at a typically windy Holker Street.

‘Winning ugly’ was something the Bluebirds perhaps didn’t manage enough under Evatt last season, as their chase for a National League play-off spot never gathered serious momentum.

On the weekend that marks the division’s 40th anniversary, however, they demonstrated that they can pick up good results when they’re not at their best.

They fashioned enough chances to deserve victory against the Glovers, who offered very little in reply and were fairly comfortably kept out by what was a rejigged back four that included midfielder Jason Taylor.

Evatt said: ““I think we deserved it, though I wish someone would turn this wind machine off up here because it seems to be fine throughout the week then come the Saturday it seems to turn on.

“I think the first half was scrappy, but in the second half we came into it a lot better and I thought we had the chances to really kill them off.

“I must give credit to the goalkeeper and the back four – I thought they were magnificent today. They’ve had to answer some criticism.

"Jason Taylor has moved back there and I thought him and Sam Hird were magnificent.

“The front three were a threat and I’m really pleased for Scott Quigley as well.

“Sometimes when you give players these big contracts, three-year deals, at this level, they need to produce the goods really quickly because if they don’t the crowd are on them.

“I think in the first couple of games he wasn’t quite himself, but I think he’s shown in the last week or so why we signed him. He’s that big, physical presence up there that can score goals.”
