When Yeovil Town visited Holker Street on the first-ever day of the new Alliance Premier League in August 1979, they were one of the most well-known non-League clubs.

That was down to their exploits in the FA Cup, where they had forged a reputation for knocking out Football League sides and 40 years on, the Glovers are again one of the biggest names in what is now the National League.

However, this time their increased profile is down to this being their first season back in the non-League ranks after their 16-year stay in the EFL came to an end in the last campaign.

It was a third relegation in six seasons for a club who were playing in the Championship as recently as 2014, when four divisions separated them and the Bluebirds.

Dropping out of League Two hit Yeovil hard, as it did with Notts County during the summer, and like the Magpies they’ve gone through a protracted takeover, with a deal for a consortium headed by Errol Pope and Scott Priestnall still to be rubber-stamped.

There was also a change of manager during the off-season with former Stevenage boss Darren Sarll boss taking charge in June to succeed caretaker Neale Marmon, who had been holding the fort since Darren Way’s sacking in March.

Sarll faced a job in rebuilding the squad for it to be ready for the rigours of the National League and barring an opening day defeat at Barnet, it has been an encouraging start to the campaign for the Glovers.

They gave their best performance of the season so far on Tuesday night when they ran out 3-1 winners at Ebbsfleet United, with their goals coming from Rhys Murphy, Remeao Hutton and Tom Whelan, three players who arrived at Huish Park this summer.

This will be Yeovil’s first match against Barrow since February 1999, when goals from Andy Hayward and Brian Dawson gave the Bluebirds a 2-0 at Holker Street in the Conference.
