I had the privilege of being amongst over 2,500 Barrow AFC fans in the away end at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Unfortunately, the result probably went the way most supporters feared – a 5-0 humbling to a rampant Chelsea side playing with confidence in front of a near sellout crowd. A difficult task for the best of Premier League teams.
Stephen Clemence’s side put on a brave display, though, and looked particularly threatening especially from set-piece opportunities but ultimately couldn’t quite muster a goal the fans craved.
However, the final result didn’t really matter. It was a night to remember for Bluebirds fans.
For many, it was a chance of a lifetime to watch their side challenge the five-time Premier League champions in their own backyard.
I spoke with fans travelling to the capital on the train before the match who all shared the same opinion.
Terry Burns, a season ticket holder at Holker Street, told me: “We might never get the opportunity of a match like this ever again. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s all about supporting the local town.”

Close friend Dave Johnson commented: “I’d be happy to keep it to a respectable score. If we score a goal it would be great. It’s very unlikely though, we’re playing against a different class here who have spent millions of pounds.
“Even their C team is going to be worth a few hundred million. It’s just a great day out for us. We’re going to have a few beers and enjoy ourselves.”
The last time Barrow visited Stamford Bridge was 76 years ago in the FA Cup Third Round where they were beaten by the same familiar 5-0 score line. You just never know when the next opportunity will be - that’s the beauty of cup competitions.
Despite the results, Barrow fans remained in high spirits and brought their singing voices. They were a credit to the club and the town.
Clemence and his staff will now turn their attention to building on the fantastic start they've made in Sky Bet League Two.
They visit Gillingham on Saturday top of the table on goal difference and should still be full of confidence.
