OFFICERS will 'not tolerate aggressive or violent behaviour' following the arrests of fans at a major sporting event in Barrow.

Cumbria Police was recently involved in ensuring the safety of spectators at two huge games for Barrow AFC and Barrow Raiders.

For the first time in many years, Carlisle United were the visitors to The Dunes Hotel Stadium for a Football League Two Cumbrian derby fixture.

It was a keenly anticipated match between the players and supporters and a healthy crowd in excess of 4,500 saw a Carlisle 2-1 win.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "The majority of supporters enjoyed the game in lovely weather however, unfortunately, six arrests were made after the game.

"This continues to show that football is for the many and we will not tolerate aggressive or violent behaviour which could spoil the game for families and genuine fans."

A week later Barrow Raiders hosted Super League Huddersfield Giants in the prestigious Rugby League Challenge Cup.

There was added interest as the game was broadcast live on BBC Two.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "A fantastic crowd of over 3,000 watched an entertaining match with the Raiders putting up a fantastic display in a 16-30 defeat against their higher league opponents.

"The day passed without incident."
