A BARROW student has led the University of Cambridge's rugby league team to their first Varsity win over the University of Oxford in 12 years.

Elliott Stockdale, who studies economics at Queens' College, is the president of the university's rugby league side and was no doubt delighted to beat Oxford for the first time since 2009.

The two rivals met at Cambridge's Grange Road last Friday as the visitors were beaten by 14 points to eight during a wet evening in Cambridgeshire.

A dominant defensive display from player-of-the-match Hugo Lloyd Williams combined with scores from James Laudage, Joe Thrush and Will Yarwood handed Cambridge a famous victory.

It was a Lloyd Williams tackle that kickstarted the winning points for Cambridge.

After forcing an Oxford error, Lloyd Williams allowed Yarwood the scoop the loose ball, who then went onto beat the cover out wide to dot down in the corner.

The final whistle sparked delirious scenes amongst the Cambridge support and Elliott's team alike after so many years without a win.

Barrovian Elliott was also the captain of the England Community Lions U-19 team that was undefeated in the 2019 Home Nations tournament.

In the same year, he picked up a Hawks' Club Charitable Trust Award for 'Outstanding achievement and contribution to University and international sport'.
