GEORGIA Stanway has revealed Jessica Ennis-Hill was her inspiration as the Olympic star won heptathlon gold in 2012.

The 22-year-old Barrovian was selected for this year’s Olympics and will be looking to emulate Ennis-Hill’s success.

Stanway said: “During the 2012 Olympics I was 13 and that was a time when you dream big and look forward to watching the Games.

“I remember always watching Jessica Ennis, she was somebody that inspired me.

“She was so unbelievable at every single sport that she did – she was almost like a superhero.”

The Manchester City forward will be representing Team GB’s women’s football squad in Tokyo.

After being selected for Hege Riise’s 18-player squad, Stanway admitted her call-up may have been a ‘surprise’ for some fans.

She said: “I think that my versatility has helped massively. For fans and supporters, it was probably a surprise to see my name on there, which is completely understandable.

“For me going forward the thing that I bring to this team is the ability to play in multiple positions.

“Sometimes it can go either way when you are versatile, but I am lucky enough it went in my favour.

“No matter what position I am in, I’ll give 110 per cent for the team and work my socks off.

“I’ll graft, do the job that is needed and do it for the team that is around me.”

Stanway will be joined by ten Manchester City team mates this summer.

With the squad being announced on Thursday, Stanway said it was an anxious wait, but was later left delighted.

“Literally I had not slept for two nights, and I actually overslept on the day it was due to be announced,” she said.

“We got an email in the morning at about 8am and then I woke up about 8.15am and I was terrified to check my inbox.

“But thankfully it said that ‘we are delighted’ so that’s when I got the initial buzz.

“I was exhilarated; it’s so hard to describe because it’s something that doesn’t happen often.

“It’s such a heartwarming feeling to know all the work you’ve put in so far and all the sacrifices you’ve made have been worth it.”
