Readers of The Mail have responded after concerns were raised about a golf club's candidate to be lady captain.

Rosemary Saunders, 70, is in the running for Ulverston Golf Club’s future Lady Captain, but is currently banned from driving.

Mrs Saunders was handed a 12-month sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay £5,000 compensation after a dangerous driving conviction in February and prompted criticism from an ex-member at the golf club.

Despite this, some readers believe Mrs Saunders’ misdemeanour should not go against her.

Ben Jones said: “How is being a dangerous driver related to one’s golfing ability? If the person who raised concerns is no longer a member of the club, what does it have to do with them?”

Another reader said: “Who cares? [I am] sick of people bringing people’s pasts up like no-one makes mistakes. [The] majority don’t get caught, that’s the difference.”

Another reader added: “[She is] probably trying to get her life back on track and give something back to the community, yet someone who clearly has a grievance wants to stop that.”

However, one reader believes the golf club would be wrong to appoint Mrs Saunders as their new lady captain.

They said: “Not a suitable candidate. She caused serious injuries because of her bad driving... she should withdraw her nomination.”

Mrs Saunders, who currently serves as the club’s Lady Vice Captain, was at the wheel of her Nissan Leaf when she collided with a Vauxhall Astra on the right-hand side of the A5087 Coast Road at Bardsea on December 9 2019.

Driver Russell Leach and his father Alfred Leach were both seriously injured in the crash and were taken to hospital.

Russell Leach suffered three cracked ribs, injuries to his knee and ankle and needed to use a walking stick for three months.

As part of her sentence, Mrs Saunders was banned from driving for two years and ordered to take an extended retest before she gets behind the wheel again.
