Celtic are reportedly closing in on a pre-contract deal for Barrow-born Preston defender Ben Davies.

The centre-half has been tracked by the Hoops for a number of months and is now said to be in discussions with the club.

It is believed he will put pen to paper on a pre-contract deal but both clubs could look to do a deal to push a move this month as opposed to the Celts having to wait until the summer.

Davies, 25, is a central defender who can also play left-back and he was subject of a bid from Bournemouth last summer which was booted into touch by Alex Neil’s side.

Premier League side Sheffield Utd have also been credited with an interest, but Glasgow's Herald and Times Sport reported that it understood Celtic have stolen a march on the player.

The newspaper told recently how Rangers confirmed they were not interested in Davies, despite reported interest in the player.

Neil Lennon yesterday revealed the club are closing in on new signings.
