Barrow’s Elliot Newby believes his Chorley side were unlucky not to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers beat the National League North team 1-0 at Victory Park last Friday.

However, despite Chorley playing five tiers below their opponents, Newby is adamant they could have won.

He commented: “It sounds strange to say against a Premier League team, but I felt that we probably deserved to win more than them, especially if you look at the chances we had.

“I had one early on, but in the second half we had two pretty clear chances, which were probably the best chances of the game, but their keeper got them out of the mess.

“We matched them in every area really, we knew that they would have more of the ball.

“We always knew if we kept a good shape then we would create a couple of chances, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.

“I felt that we could have won the game, but their goal was brilliant.”

Vitinha’s 12th minute strike was Wolves’ only shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Following the game, players from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side admitted that they had faced tough opposition, according to Newby.

“They were quite complimentary about us after the game, I heard their players saying we did well and unlucky not to win,” he began.

“They showed us a lot of respect in the game.

“It was a great experience to see their players up close and see how they do things.”

The defeat put an end to Chorley’s magnificent run in the competition after beating Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Derby County in the three previous rounds.

Newby revealed that he was proud of how far the team has come and what they have achieved this season.

Currently, Chorley's league campaign has been postponed for a fortnight following the National League's announcement last week.

It is understood to be due to Covid-19 and funding.
