Barrow AFC have confirmed that there were no positive Covid-19 results following the blanket testing carried out across the English Football League (EFL) this week.

All of the club’s players and backroom staff were tested on Tuesday morning at the Egerton training ground.

All 35 tests were returned with a negative result.

Chief executive Levi Gill has welcomed the news.

He said: “We’re obviously delighted that our COVID-19 test results were all returned ‘negative’.

"Receiving this strong set of results gives us real confidence in the protocols the Club has in place for the players, but we’re mindful that the national picture is still worsening, and we can’t afford to become complacent.

“We will continue to rely on the support and cooperation of all staff and players in the coming weeks, as well as the patience of supporters, in order to get through the tough period which lies ahead.”

This development from the Holker Street outfit comes as the EFL announced plans for the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) to fund a twice-weekly Covid-19 testing regime for clubs across all three divisions, which will come in to force from Monday 11 January.

Gill added: “Barrow welcome the news that the PFA has agreed to invest significantly in regular player testing moving forward.

“This is the minimum requirement if elite football is to continue through the coming weeks, and it is a relief that the PFA has acknowledged their pivotal role in assisting clubs in ensuring the safety of players.

“All of those working in professional sport are being asked to do something that only a small minority of employees are currently doing by continuing to go to work.

“Keeping everybody safe during this time is my first concern and that of everybody else at Barrow AFC.

“The Club will continue to engage with all stakeholders to ensure that we de-risk the environment as far as possible for all personnel.”
