Barrow Raiders have confirmed that four players have left the club.

The club said ‘honorary Barrovian’ Wartovo Puara is one of the four who will not be featuring for the side.

In 2019, Puara had agreed terms with the Raiders for two years.

However, the restrictions of the Tier 5 sporting visa meant that Puara was only able to sign one year at a time.

Puara returned to Papua New Guinea in March.

The club then opened discussions surrounding his return during the summer but due to the uncertainty of the current situation, Puara was unable to commit for the upcoming 2021 season.

However, the club have insisted that they are keen for the Papua New Guinean’s return for the 2022 season.

In 2021, Puara will be hoping to represent Papua New Guinea in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

In addition to Puara, Jono Smith, Perry Singleton and Lee Jewitt have also left the club ahead of Betfred League 1 2021 season.

Smith has joined North Wales Crusaders.

The club said he would be fondly remembered as a fans’ favourite.

Smith was offered terms to stay with the Raiders but revealed he wanted to finish his professional career where it started in North Wales.

Singleton and Jewitt only featured briefly for Barrow Raiders before the pandemic began.

The two have moved on to Workington Town and Widnes respectively.

Raiders have commended both for their professionalism and believed they would have made a big impact in the push for promotion.

Last month, The RFL had identified the first weeks of March as a start date for the 2021 season.

This prompted coach Paul Crarey to urge the body to provide a definitive start date

Crarey’s side have not played a game since their 50-6 win over Coventry Bears at Craven Park.

However, Saturday’s announcement from Boris Johnson has caused the club to stop some of its programmes.

As a result of this, existing social rugby league activities have been suspended for the duration of the lockdown.

This has meant that the club’s touch rugby competition, the JETS programme, Girls rugby sessions and walking rugby have been cancelled.
