The introduction of salary caps in the Football League will benefit Barrow AFC - and could even give them a slight advantage over some clubs.

After new rules were introduced earlier this year, League Two clubs cannot spend over £1 million on player expenses.

The new rules have been slammed by some sides, with others having to significantly reduce their wage bills to comply with the rules.

Barrow AFC CEO Levi Gill can understand the backlash to the new rules, but believes it will be a bigger benefit to the Bluebirds going into the new campaign.

He said: “Fortunately for us we are coming into it from a good position where we have a low cost base, so we have a greater room to manoeuvre that clubs who have big overheads.

“It means we have room to move whereas other clubs are having to reduce their wage bills.

“And here we have an ownership model where we are not reckless but we have supportive owners.

“For us this salary cap is excellent because it will allow us to compete, although deals signed before the cap are exempt so it will take two or three years for them to kick in.

“I can see the argument of clubs who turn over £3 million to £4 million a year, and I understand why they are unhappy the EFL are telling them how to spend it.

“But you have to look at the bigger picture.”
