Barrow Raiders could be in for a surprise promotion to the Rugby League Championship if a top tier side does not continue.

The future of Toronto, who compete in the Super League is currently up in their air at the moment.

It is possible they won't compete next season, meaning a club could potentially be promoted from the Championship, meaning a club from Barrow's league, could move up to the Championship.

Chairman Steve Neale has revealed he has made contacted with RFL CEO Ralph Rimmer, putting forward Barrow's case, if the situation were to arise.

He said: "It will be a shame if they didn’t continue. We have introduced rugby league to a brand new audience and I firmly believe that they could have flourished without the interrupted campaign. I don’t want rugby league to be a secret kept for regionalised parts of the UK and Australia.

"However, if Toronto do go to the wall there presents an opportunity for our club. I’m not sure that Super League would like to go with 11 teams so there could be a promotion opportunity for a Championship team and in turn another from League One to balance the Championship. Clearly, I believe that Barrow Raiders are the right choice to be that team. I have sent a message to Ralph Rimmer championing our cause and I think the positive work we have been doing is being recognised by the people that matter, let’s hope so."
