THE Bluebirds’ season remains up in the air after the National League was indefinitely suspended due to the coronavirus crisis.

Barrow AFC’s manager Ian Evatt said the club was still awaiting a decision on whether or not the club would be promoted to League Two.

Four points clear at the top of the table with only a handful of games left to play before the Covid-19 crisis hit the UK, promotion would see the Bluebirds return to the English Football League for the first time since 1972.

Yesterday, the National League said it would indefinitely suspend its three divisions due to Covid-19.

Having controversially played a day after the Premier League and EFL had announced their games were off due to Covid-19, the competition belatedly called a halt to their matches on March 16.

Discussions as to how best to finish the season have continued and the National League has now confirmed its three seasons are subject to an undetermined postponement.

“I’m guessing this is the first phase of protocol," said Evatt.

“There was no way football was going to continue given the situation we find ourselves in now with the Coronavirus pandemic.

“So we’re still none the wiser in terms of the bigger picture here and the final outcome with the league.”

He added: “In terms of where we stand on this, nothing has changed - for us, the league being made null and void is not an option.

“It rewards the clubs who have underperformed and punishes those who have achieved highly.

“It’s that simple.”

A National League statement read: “The National League Board met earlier today and has reviewed its prior decision to suspend the competition until at least 3rd April 2020.

“In consideration of the very serious and unprecedented national public health emergency caused by the coronavirus, the Board has taken the decision to suspend the National League, National League North and National League South competitions indefinitely.

“The National League is currently obtaining specialist legal advice, is consulting regularly with The Football Association and other stakeholders, and is committed to involving its member clubs in a pending decision on how best to conclude the 2019/20 season.”

The National League, National League North and National League South all fall under this ruling.
