Barrow Raiders head coach doesn't want to see the attempts to expand rugby league come at the expense of the game's heartlands in this country.

Next season, Ottawa Aces are set to follow in the footsteps of Toronto Wolfpack and enter the English league system, with them due to be accepted into Betfred League One.

With two French teams, Catalans Dragons and Toulouse, also in the professional leagues, this has brought about logistical problems, not least when some of the cash-strapped clubs in the second and third tiers have had to travel to Canada in recent years.

The expansion could also include a team from New York joining the ranks the year after Ottawa, but Crarey has his concerns.

He said: "Personally, I don't know where we're going with it all. I think the heartland clubs are being left behind because it's all about money now.

"I'm a traditionalist and I like to see all the traditional clubs do well, but the game's changing and life's changing now.

"It's probably not about winning and losing anymore, but about businesses buying into a product, especially in North America - we went to the baseball, spent two hours there and probably didn't watch a lot of baseball because there was so much going on.

"They'll market it a little bit different. Whether it will work long-term remains to be seen and we can't put the game in jeopardy."
