It was a successful first night for Barrow Boxing Promotions and for local fighters Lee Kellett and Callum Pearson, who both came away with championships at 'The Homecoming'.

The show at Hoops Basketball Centre in Barrow was put together by Kellett and Pearson, who are now fighting under the British and Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) after leaving the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC).

The two were co-headlining the show and it was Askam heavyweight Kellett who was the first to step in the ring, as he faced Ghana’s Nuhu Azuma for the PBC Heavyweight International Silver title.

Azuma tried to impose himself early in the fight, but Kellett’s movement prevented any of his opponents’ heavy blows from catching him too cleanly.

The 41-year-old then landed a big shot of his own and followed up with another that sent Azuma down.

The Ghanaian rose to his feet quickly, and again after Kellett had downed him for a second time with a massive shot, but after a third knockdown, he was unsteady on his feet and the referee had no option but to stop the fight with 49 seconds of the first round remaining.

Rounding off the night was Barrow super welterweight Pearson, as he challenged another Ghanaian in Daniel Aduku for the PBC International Championship.

The bout went the full ten rounds, with both fighters going at each other hard from the opening bell, with control switching back and forth at regular intervals.

Pearson had the better of the early rounds, but as the fight progressed Aduku began to land more punches.

Visibly tiring, Pearson resorted to boxing through the final round rather than look for the killer blow and that approach paid off as the judges scored the contest 98-92, 99-91 and 98-95 in his favour.

Earlier in the night, Nicola Hopewell had stopped Ghana’s Anita Addy to win the PBC Super Flyweight International Silver Championship, while Paul Peers defeated Nicaragua’s Milton Arauz for the PBC Welterweight International title.

The promoters would like to thank sponsors Empire Carpets, Chaps Barbers, the Mason Arms in Dalton, Elite Dance Dalton, Walshy’s Gym, Evans Autobody, EAB Graphics, ADS Roofing and the Holiday Inn for making the show possible.
