To call Barrow Raiders v Workington Town a ‘friendly rivalry’ may be pushing it, but there are players on both sides who will be coming up against some familiar faces at Craven Park tomorrow.

The match itself, which kicks off at 1:30pm, is Jarrad Stack’s testimonial and the second row is a man who is still remembered fondly at Derwent Park, where he plied his trade for eight seasons between 2009 and 2016.

New Raiders centre Perry Singleton will be coming up against the team he had to leave last autumn due to work commitments, while it’s a first trip back for prop Andrew Dawson, who left for Workington just over a year ago after six seasons with the Raiders.

There are also several players in Town’s squad who came through with amateur clubs in the Furness area and it’s this familiarity that may bring about a feisty encounter between the two Cumbrian rivals, despite the friendly status.

Head coach Paul Crarey said: “Everyone knows each other - we know their players as there are a few local lads and a couple of our academy lads have gone up there, Ethan Bickerdike and Zak Steel, even though they’re probably not ready for us at the moment.

“They could get a run-out at the weekend for Workington and there’s some players who we’ve had down here, like Andrew Dawson and Tyler Lancaster, who came through our academy, and it’s good to see players like that in a professional environment.”

The match will give Barrow supporters a first look at Lee Jewitt, with the former Hull KR prop being managed carefully during pre-season as it is his return from a long-standing knee injury.

There will also be a return to action for Danny Morrow, who is back from holiday, while Papua New Guinea international Wartovo Puara will get his first run-out since flying back to England last week.

There aren’t too many confirmed absences for the Raiders, but loose forward Jono Smith does miss out due to other commitments, while hookers Nathan Mossop (shoulder) and Joe Crarey (wrist) are both injured.

Crarey said: “We’re definitely looking forward to the game. I though Workington played very well against Whitehaven last week, they had a real good shape with plenty of effort and some good young players in.

“I thought Andrew Dawson was really good for them and their two halves were outstanding, and they’ll need to be fit for them to be good in this league, but they’re going to be a threat.

“It starts to build up this week and a lot of our senior players will be playing this week - Danny Morrow will be back, Lee Jewitt will be playing as well.

“We’ll be looking to give our senior players some more minutes then, again, we’ll be looking to bring the amateurs in, who have been outstanding.”

“We’re looking forward to it and we’ll see what we’ve got before our two weeks ahead of our Challenge Cup game."
