Athletics clubs Leven Valley AC and Walney Wind Cheetahs have got together to launch a new running event, which will be held later in the year.

The first-ever Walney Run Festival will take place on Sunday, September 6 and will be open to athletes and fun runners young and old.

The two clubs will be putting on a fun day of running for all age groups and they hope to be able to attract runners from outside the Furness area.

Race director Phil Everett, of Leven Valley AC, said: "We are delighted to be working alongside the Walney Wind Cheetahs and are looking forward to the event.

"It's great to work closely with other clubs and members and show what can be achieved with teamwork. We hope to support athletes and fun runners and bring something new to the community.

"We will be supporting local charities and hope we will gain support from the people of Furness and further afield to ensure this becomes a yearly event."

Walney Wind Cheetahs chairman Ian Jones said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Leven Valley. Two local clubs joining forces to provide a local running event is great.

"The aim is to establish a festival that will become an annual event in the local sporting calendar. We also hope this event will encourage more people to take up running as part of physical and mental health improvement."
