Former soap star Philip Middlemiss was amongst the spectators at the Freemasons’ boxing evening at the Cumbria Grand Hotel in Grange.

Middlemiss, better known to viewers as Coronation Street character Des Barnes, had come to watch his son Alfie take on Ethan Holt of Barrow ABC. It was worthwhile journey, as Alfie won the bout on a split decision.

Masonic boxing committee treasurer Graham Benson said: “The final sums still have to be done but I can confidently predict that we will have raised at least £10,000 this year.

"This will be distributed later in the year when half will be given to local charities and half donated to the masonic charities for disbursement to good causes.

"Traditionally, the £5,000 intended for worthy causes locally will be aimed at those smaller charities that do not always get a lot of recognition.”

With raffles, a tote and an auction, there were plenty of opportunities for the patrons to be parted from their cash. Additionally, very generous sponsors ensure that the occasion was as always a profitable one.

Boxing committee chairman Barrie Bray said: "We are grateful to Kendal Boxing Club, with whom we run the event.

"I also express our thanks to the superb sponsors, the volunteers from the lodges of the area who act as stewards and the raffle ticket sellers who help make the evening such a huge success."
