Ulverston Ladies teamed up with Kirkby Lonsdale to maximum effect in midweek, as they won the North West Walking Netball Christmas Tournament, which was held in Wigan.

On Wednesday, 12 teams from the five counties across the North West travelled to Greater Manchester for what was a day full of netball and laughs.

Competing at the Ulversby Elves, the combined forces won four of their five games and lost the other by just one goal in matches that were played across two six-minute halves, either side of a one-minute interval.

Active communities organiser at Ulverston Leisure Centre Hannah Paling said: “Its great that the ladies are not only playing in Ulverston, they are even meeting up with other walking netball groups in the area, as well as competing in competitions around the county and region.

"It's turned in to such a social thing now- they don’t just meet and play on Tuesday here at Ulverston. They often travel to Kirkby Lonsdale on a Thursday to play with their group.

"A good number of these ladies use to play or umpire at a good level a while back and I’m so happy I’ve been able to give them the opportunity to be able to play their much-loved sport again and play it competitively.

"You never get too old for a medal and the feeling of winning is such a great sense of achievement – that healthy competitive streak never leaves you.”
