Midfielder John Rooney wasn't exonerating himself from blame after Barrow AFC passed up a number of chances during their victory over Aldershot Town last Saturday.

In truth, most of Rooney's openings came from free-kicks, with Shots goalkeeper Mitch Walker having to tip a couple of his efforts over, although he did ignore support before being denied again deep into stoppage time.

However, the 28-year-old did have a hand in what turned out to be the Bluebirds' winning goal in their 1-0 win, as his shot was diverted into the net by Dior Angus.

Ian Evatt's side had plenty of chances to make the afternoon a more comfortable one, but Josh Kay put a sitter over the bar, Angus was denied by a good save and both Scott Quigley and Jack Hindle were guilty of delaying too long in shooting.

Rooney, who captained the team again, said: "Obviously, we had a lot of chances and the score could have been anything, but it was the same last week [against Maidenhead].

"We had plenty of chances, but we've got to put those chances away. I probably should have had a couple myself and it was just one of those days where we were glad to get the three points.

"You'd be more worried if you weren't creating chances. You've got to create chances to win games, but we've got to start putting teams to bed."

The match against Aldershot was Barrow's last at Holker Street before Christmas, with their players making the most of their time in the town by visiting the children's ward at Furness General Hospital.

The squad gave out presents that had bought with their own money and Rooney believes it's vital for them to give something back to the community in that way.

He said: "It's important that we do stuff like that off the pitch because they're coming here to support us and we've got to give something back to the community as well.

"We've got to keep that kind of thing going, I think.

"When we went there, there were only four kids and we said that was a good thing that is wasn't chock-a[-block] with kids in there because you don't want any kid in hospital over Christmas.

"But you could from the few that were in there that they had smiles on their faces and it's great that we could give them some special moments.
