Scotland international Brett Carter will be remaining in the Betfred Championship for the 2020 season after he left Barrow Raiders to sign for their Cumbrian rivals Whitehaven.

Carter, who can play at winger or full back, spent three seasons at Craven Park, scoring 14 tries and kicking eight goals in 47 appearances, but was only able to play in six matches in his last campaign with the Raiders, who were relegated to League One.

The 30-year-old was one of many members of the Barrow squad who were affected by injury during the campaign, although part of that was self-inflicted as he fell from a Christmas tree in a drunken incident at the town centre.

His focus will now be on keeping Haven in the Championship, along with former Raiders teammates Glenn Riley and Tom Walker, who both moved to the Recreation Ground in September.

Carter said: “I couldn’t be happier to sign for Whitehaven and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a new challenge for me in a tough league, I like to challenge myself and I reckon Whitehaven will be a good place to do it.

“I know a lot of the lads up there already and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Whitehaven head coach Gary Charlton said: “Brett is another player that can play in a couple of different positions and gives us that flexibility in the backs.

“I’ve known him a few years he’ll fit in to the squad and buys in to what we are about. He’s a good addition to the squad, he’s Cumbrian and has Championship experience.”

Carter signed for Barrow, who are his hometown club, from Workington Town, where he made his debut in 2009 and went on to make 141 appearances, scoring 52 tries. He also played for Scotland in the 2015 World Cup.
