Midfielder John Rooney went through a prolific start to the season with Barrow AFC, but he has said he would happily go through the rest of the season without scoring if it meant the team winning promotion.

With nine goals so far, Rooney is only one short of the total he chalked up in the whole of his first campaign with the Bluebirds.

His purple patch of seven goals in five games, along with Scott Quigley's great form up front, during September was a big reason AFC were able to propel themselves towards the upper reaches of the National League after a frustrating start to the season.

Due to a couple of free weekends in the past month, it's been a stop-start period for Ian Evatt's side and Rooney is more focused on helping them maintain their momentum than adding to his own total.

He said: "I'd swap them goals for points at the beginning of the season that I feel we should have picked up.

"For me to score is a bonus and I'd take three points any day of the week over scoring - I'd take not scoring another one this season if we were to reach our aims, whether we go up automatically or via the play-offs.

"Whatever it's going to take, I would swap my goals for that. Obviously, we're above Notts County in the table at the moment and we've got to make sure that we don't let them get within touching distance of us."
