Windermere recorded their first win since the opening day of the season by narrowly defeating Millom 20-19 at Dawes Meadow in a match that finished with both players having a player sent off.

The Blues had made the journey to Windermere in good form and took the lead with an early converted try that was cancelled out by the Ambers’ fly-half Bertie Hodgson, who added the extras himself to level the game at 7-7.

The match remained a close battle, with the hosts adding further tries through Damian Armstrong and Moses and Hodgson kicking a penalty to keep their noses in front after Millom had ran in two other scores themselves.

The match had been played in a good spirit, but with matters going to the wire, tempers boiled over after Windermere’s Adam Hague was sent off for ‘careless use of a leg in a ruck.’

In the fracas that followed, Millom also had a man dismissed for punching second row Josh Dawson, but they could have snatched victory at the death, only for a late penalty to drift wide.

Furness’ travel sickness this season continued with a 41-10 defeat at a strong Upper Eden side, who lifted themselves above Hawcoat Park in the table and up to fifth.

Ambleside Centurions returned to action after a three-year absence last Saturday and although their new team lost out 17-5 against Whitehaven 2nd XI, it was a day of celebration for the Galava Park club.
