Barrow’s Georgia Stanway came on as a substitute for England women in front of a record crowd at Wembley, but she couldn’t stop the Lionesses from falling to a 2-1 defeat against Germany.

Klara Buhl’s 90th-minute goal condemned the Lionesses to what was a fifth defeat in seven games for the Lionesses, as their post-World Cup hangover continued.

The Germans, ranked second in the world, were the better team on an evening where the record attendance for an England women’s international was shattered.

It didn’t quite beat the record 80,203 that witnessed the women’s gold medal match in the 2012 Olympics in the same venue, but the 77,768 inside was far more than the 45,619 who saw England face Germany in 2014.

The hosts simply weren’t at the races in the opening stages, as Germany made themselves at home and they almost went ahead when Lena Oberdorf’s rising effort was tipped on to the bar by ‘keeper Mary Earps.

It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead after nine minutes when Kathrin Hendrich was given too much time to cross for Alexandra Popp to head into the top corner.

England woke from their malaise, however, and were awarded a penalty when Beth Mead, who was earlier caught by a poor challenge from Sara Doorsoun, was fouled by German ‘keeper Merle Frohms.

Frohms quickly redeemed herself by denying Nikita Parris from the spot, but the Lionesses were deservedly level in the 44th minute.

Keira Walsh whipped in a lovely ball into the area that Stanway’s Manchester City colleague Ellen White, looking suspiciously offside, touched in from close range.

England were fortunate just after the hour mark when Earps spilled Buhl’s effort and Lina Magull turned in the rebound, although she was well offside in doing so and the goal was ruled out.

Stanway, who was only called into the squad the day before, was introduced into the action after 76 minutes in place of Arsenal’s Jordan Nobbs, but it was Germany who stole a late winner.

It was superbly taken by Buhl, who teased Lionesses captain Steph Houghton as she entered the area before steering in a fine finish into the bottom corner that gave Earps no chance.
